Recently I made two short videos critiquing some copy.

The first pulled apart copy I had written, and the second, some copy I wish I had written.

I bundled these videos with my little rant on Claude Hopkins (ipad friendly, at last), and thought no more about it.

I thought the videos would interest some of you – but I was utterly wrong.

In fact I was astounded.

They interested pretty much all of you – 98 percent to be precise.

“Marvellous!” I thought. I’ll do pretty much the same again next time”…

Fast forward a month.

There I was mulling over what to analyse for the next video and a question I fear most reared its ugly head, courtesy of my partner Al:

“Drayton, what’s the best copy you’ve ever written? Why don’t you critique that?”

Not only is that hard to answer; there’s also the thorny matter of opinion.

It counts for nothing. Sales, however, do.

Well, I wrote one letter that was a knockout success. Sales poured in from both sides of the Atlantic.

And you won’t be surprised to know it wasn’t selling something cheap. You could even say it was selling Paradise.

If pushed to pick out the best copy I’d ever written – ever – it may well be this.

That’s not because it is particularly “creative”.

It’s just because as far as I can see everything about it was absolutely right.

Even now, I wouldn’t change a single word: every sentence has something going for it.

And that’s my acid test. Can you pick something up – years after you’ve written it – and say you wouldn’t change a single word?

I’ve been writing copy for decades. I’m forever tinkering and editing.

But I can honestly say this is the one piece I wouldn’t change. Not a word. So here it is. I go through all 8 pages of this letter, right to the PS, sentence by sentence. Even the pictures, and especially the envelope.
